Nadat hij was uitgekozen om als figurant op een filmset te werken, ontwikkelde Zhao een liefde voor acteren. Tijdens zijn studie aan de Beijing Film Academy nam Zhao deel aan verschillende filmprojecten. Zhao's doorbraakrol als hoofdrolspeelster was in 'Princess Pearl', een Taiwanese televisieserie. In 1999, nadat Princess Pearl was uitgezonden, begon Zhao ook een zangcarrière met haar eerste album, Swallow. Na haar doorbraak was Zhao betrokken bij een aantal controverses over haar persoonlijke en professionele leven, zoals het poseren in een jurk die leek op een Japanse oorlogsvlag. Ze wordt beschouwd als een van de 'Vier Young Dan-actrices' in China.
Vanwege haar prestaties op het gebied van film, televisie en muziek noemden de Japanse media haar China's nummer 1 actrice, en het Britse The Independent omschreef haar als 'China's box office darling'. Ze is onder meer bekroond met de Hundred Flowers Award, Shanghai Film Critics Award, Huabiao Award, Golden Eagle TV Award en Shanghai Film Festival Golden Globet.
In 2009 trouwde Zhao met Huang You Long, een vastgoedmagnaat uit China. Op 11 april 2010 is zij bevallen van een dochter.
In augustus 2021 werd Wei om onverklaarbare reden op de zwarte lijst gezet door de toezichthouders van Peking. Haar naam is verwijderd van alle sociale mediaplatforms, inclusief haar credits van alle werken die ze tot nu toe heeft verschenen.
