In 2002 maakte Yang Zi haar debuut in Ru Ci Chu Shan en in 2004 maakte ze haar debuut op groot scherm in de film Girl's Diary.
In 2012 won Yang Zi de Best Newcomer Award bij de 14e Golden Phoenix Awards voor de thrillerfilm Insistence (守株人). Yang Zi won de prijs voor beste actrice in de moderne tv-serie tijdens de 26e Huading Awards en de prijs voor beste actrice (categorie Emerald) tijdens de 6e prijsuitreiking van The Actors of China. Op het iQiyi All-Star Carnival 2019 won ze de iQiyi Scream Goddess en verdiende ze de prijs voor favoriete vrouwelijke bijrol op het 16e Guangzhou Student Film Festival voor haar werk aan 'The Bravest' (烈火英雄). Ze won drie opeenvolgende Weibo Queen-titels tijdens de Weibo Awards-ceremonies van 2019, 2020 en 2024 en werd tijdens de Tencent All-Star Night van 2023 uitgeroepen tot TV Drama Actrice van het Jaar.
Op 15 november 2021 kondigde Yang Zi het aflopen van haar contract bij H&R Century Pictures Co., Ltd aan en richtte de volgende dag haar eigen persoonlijke studio op.
