Hij trad in 1996 op 11-jarige leeftijd in dienst bij het Japanse talentenbureau Johnny & Associates en maakte in 2004 zijn officiële cd-debuut bij NEWS. In 2006 debuteerde hij als soloartiest met de hitsingle 'Daite Senorita'. Yamashita studeerde in de herfst van 2008 af aan de handelsfaculteit van de Meiji Universiteit met een graad in marketing.
Hij bracht zijn eerste soloalbum uit, getiteld Supergood, Superbad, op 26 januari 2011. Net als al zijn eerdere releases debuteerde het album bovenaan de wekelijkse hitlijsten van Oricon.
Sinds augustus 2020 is Yamashita door Johnny & Associates voor onbepaalde tijd geschorst van acteren/zingen vanwege bewezen beschuldigingen van drinken met minderjarige meisjes in groepsverband met Kamenashi Kazuya op 30 juli 2020. Zowel hij als Kamenashi beweren hun leeftijd niet te kennen. Op 31 oktober 2020 verliet hij Johnny & Associates om een carrière in het buitenland na te streven.
Op 21 maart 2021 werd hij benoemd tot ambassadeur van 'BVLGARI' en in mei van datzelfde jaar werd hij geselecteerd als Japanse ambassadeur van 'Dior Beauty'.
Op 25 november 2021 bracht hij zijn eerste fotoboek 'Circle' uit.
