Drie jaar nadat Lin haar acteerdebuut maakte in een tv-commercial, kreeg ze van de ene op de andere dag nationale en regionale bekendheid vanwege haar rol als Xia Ziwei in de tv-serie My Fair Princess (1998-1999). My Fair Princess was zeer populair in de Oost- en Zuidoost-landen; lancering van Lin als een begrip in Azië. Ze volgde het succes met andere hitseries, waaronder The Duke of Mount Deer (2000), Romance in the Rain (2001), Boy & Girl (2003), Affair of Half a Lifetime (2004), Beauty's Rival in Palace (2010), De glamoureuze keizerlijke concubine (2011) en The Way We Were (2014).
Sinds 2010 produceert Lin tv-drama's en tv-films met zichzelf in de hoofdrol, zowel op het vasteland van China als in Taiwan. Haar productiedebuut The Glamorous Imperial Concubine (2011) won haar beste producer bij de TV Drama Awards Made in China 2012, en haar eerste Taiwanese dramaproductie The Way We Were (2014) won drie van de zeven nominaties, waaronder die voor beste televisieserie bij de 50e Gouden Bel-onderscheidingen. In 1999 begon ze ook een zangcarrière met haar debuutalbum Heartbeat, en sindsdien heeft ze zes albums uitgebracht.
Volgens Apple Daily was Lin de derde best verdienende Taiwanese dramaactrice in 2011, en de best verdienende in 2012 en 2013.
In mei 2016 bevestigde Lin haar relatie met de Taiwanese acteur Wallace Huo. Ze raakten naar verluidt een relatie rond Lin's verjaardag in januari 2016. Lin trouwde op 31 juli 2016 met Huo in het Bulgari Hotel op Bali. Beroemdheden die de bruiloft bijwoonden waren onder meer Zhao Wei, Fan Bingbing, Shu Qi, Liu Tao, Liu Shishi, Nicky Wu en Hu Ge. Het paar hield op 2 augustus 2016 ook weer een huwelijksreceptie in Taipei. Het echtpaar heeft een dochter, geboren in januari 2017.
