De show gaf Lau de kans om in films te werken, maar grote rollen ontgingen hem nog steeds en daarom vertrok hij naar Taiwan om daar zijn fortuin te beproeven. Lau bleef alleen televisiewerk vinden en overwoog de industrie helemaal te verlaten totdat hij werd benaderd door mede-TVB-alumni Derek Yee om te schitteren in het romantische drama C'est La Vie Mon Cheri. De film was een grote hit en Lau bereikte eindelijk het filmsterrendom.
Sindsdien heeft Lau bewezen dat hij een van de meest veelzijdige acteurs van Hong Kong is en in bijna elk filmgenre te zien is, van actie (Big Bullet) tot komedie (Bomb Disposal Officer: Baby Bomb) tot drama (Too Many Ways to Be Number One). en is een van de populairste acteurs in de regio geworden. Zijn recente werk met Milkyway Productions (zoals Johnnie To's A Hero Never Dies) heeft hem internationale aandacht opgeleverd en geholpen het misdaadfilmgenre nieuw leven in te blazen.
Buiten het scherm leidt Lau een redelijk normaal leven met zijn vrouw (voormalig Miss Hong Kong Amy Kwok) en is in alle opzichten een van de aardigste en meest nuchtere personen die je ooit zou ontmoeten. In een tijd waarin veel van de beste acteurs uit Hong Kong naar het buitenland verhuizen, met pensioen gaan of hun salaris naar een torenhoog niveau verhogen, lijkt Lau vastbesloten om in Hong Kong te blijven werken en zijn vraagprijs laag te houden om de industrie te helpen bloeien. .
