In 2016 was hij te zien in de succesvolle Chinese televisieserie 'Noble Aspirations', waardoor hij meer populariteit verwierf in China. Datzelfde jaar won hij de prijs in de categorie Newcomer Award tijdens de 7e Donews Award-ceremonie in het Beijing Performing Arts Center. Cheng Yi verscheen vervolgens in zowel films als drama's als The Big Rescue (2018) en The Lost Tomb 2: Explore with the Note (2019).
Cheng Yi maakte zijn solomuziekdebuut in 2017 met de single Goodbye to the Past. Sindsdien heeft hij twee extra nummers uitgebracht, een met de titel Living like Raging Wave in 2019 voor 'The Lost Tomb 2: Explore with the Note en een ander in 2020 met de titel Guard for Love and Redemption. In 2020 speelde Cheng Yi de hoofdrol naast Yuan Bing Yan in het hitdrama 'Love and Redemption'.
In de zomer van 2023 speelde Cheng Yi samen met Joseph Zeng en Aero Xiao in het onderzoekswuxia-hitdrama 'Mysterious Lotus Casebook' en het kreeg een hoge beoordeling van 9,8 op het uitgebrachte platform IQIYI. Bovendien zong hij een van de OST's voor het drama. Op 2 november 2023 won Cheng Yi een van de enige twee van deze prijzen die die avond werden uitgereikt; de Outstanding Young Actor Award voor zijn serie 'Mysterious Lotus Casebook' op het prestigieuze 19e jaarlijkse Chinees-Amerikaanse Film & TV Festival in Los Angeles, Californië.
